So a few weeks ago, Mom asked what would I like for my birthday treat – head across the causeway aka Johor Bahru (which is our usual way of celebrating birthdays) or something else? As you know, Dim sum is usually eaten mid morning, so I took this opportunity to head over to Red Star Restaurant (红星酒家) for a nice branch.
Being half cantonese (Mom’s side), I can never resist dim sum and I’m glad I came here instead of the usual Japanese/Thai food choices on our birthdays! Even though I must say that it’s a relatively expensive place – almost $80 for the both of us but reminiscing back at the taste of it, WORTH IT!

No dim sum is complete without tea, this time we got Chrysanthemum Tea – light and perfect.

Pi dan porridge - one word, YUMS!

One of my all time favourite cantonese dishes would be Lotus Leaf Rice! The fragrance of the rice + over flowing ingredients in it makes this dish a wonderful choice!!

The highlight has got to be the ROAST DUCK! I highly recommend it!

Unique way of keeping tab on how many items you’ve roughly eaten.

I still love the old school way of how my dim sum is served while the Aunty calls in her push cart.

Interior that has not changed a single bit!

So for the whole day, my Mom was constantly on the phone (which is very rare) + she kept insisting on heading off to town despite us just having a very hearty meal. So I thought, okay, maybe she’s really still hungry and I also wanted to trim my hair, why not! But looked who turned up and a VERY SURPRISED birthday dinner for me – MY BEST PALS!! Never would I have imaged, because some were really ‘ heartless’ to actually not wish me at all. I didn’t mind no celebration but I’m a wordy person, so a simple text/card would already make me HAPPY! So glad I got to spend quality time with both my favourite pals + mom! I can only say THANK YOU for the wonderful company and I’m glad I’m growing older (gracefully) with these amazing friends that I cannot ask for more!
