PAUL Bakery

Paul Bakery #1

Paul Bakery #2

What I’ve read from reviews mentioned that the deserts offered at PAUL Bakery (Singapore) can’t be compared with the taste of what is offered in Europe (Not like I’ve been to Europe anyways), but on my end, I thought the the selection and quality was good. The macarons was not bad while a friend liked the fruit tarts more, to each to his own taste. But overall it was a nice experience – nothing like a good cup of aromatic tea, macarons and the smell of fresh baked pastries lingering throughout the cafe while you unwind after a long day.

Drop by if you’ve not done so, who knows you might fall in love with the interior too, well, at least I did!

Carpenter and Cook

I decided to only blog about Carpenter and Cook after a few more visits to this quaint place as I didn’t get to try all the ‘must haves’ during my other visits, but now with a better idea of how the place is like, I’d have a go at a post of my views on it. For the many, including myself, was initially complaining about the prices of how expensive the pastries/food cost but after finding out what ingredients and how much EFFORT has been put into baking these lovelies, I changed my perspective toward that. I’ve been told by a friend who works there about the crazy hours that the chef has to put in to create each and every item sold but of course the bosses and staff would be more than willing to chat up with you, so ask away.

Carpenter and Cook

The Queen of Heart’s Tarts – Passionfruit Meringue ($6.20) which has been crazily raved by many, and I know why! Each bite was filled flavours and they are not stingy about it!

Carpenter and Cook

The Queen of Hearts’ Tarts - Lemon Cream ($6.20) had us either loving it or disliking it. To friends, they describe the flavour of this as BABY’S MILK (FYI, the person who commented on this is a father!!). There is undoubtedly a great amount of milk based. So this is something to take note of when ordering this, but for me, I would say that it taste better as time goes by, to each person’s preferences.

Carpenter and Cook

The Queen of Hearts’ Tarts - Chocolate Sea Salt Caramel ($6.20) is one word YUMS if you’re a chocolate fan!

Carpenter and Cook

The White Rabbit’s Carrot Cake ($7.00) which was recommended by Lisa (a friend that works there) which I did not regret listening at all. This isn’t quite the usual cake but it’s filled with nuts, raisins and I think some orange/lemon as I tasted something zesty (Please correct me if I’m wrong).

Carpenter and Cook

It’s such a beautiful place filled with furbished/unfurnished antiques that you can actually buy back if any of the pieces catches your eye, just ask and you’ll have a better idea of what’s for sale or not. I love how warm the place feels and yes, I have a thing for big long tables, makes the cafe experience very communal. Looking forward to make another trip here and this time I will get the homemade jams which looks equally YUMMY!

Carpenter and Cook

I’m glad my friends enjoyed this place as much as I did. Let’s go visit more cafes!!

Lovin’ Lovely

So Min who has just graduated from ‘The New School’ in Fine Arts and was back in Singapore for a short ‘homecoming’ before she starts selling her life away to the workforce! Our friendship dates back to almost 20 years ago but it still feels just like yesterday that we were neighbours. After umpteen times of unsuccessfully trying to schedule a meet up every time she comes back, I’m so glad we made this meet up a success and it was awesome! I couldn’t wait to bring her around the Arab Street area.

Fika Swedish Cafe and Bristo definitely had the good and bad, but most probably wouldn’t get my 2nd visit unless there is a call for it.

Lovin' Lovely

Min’s Toast Skagen – Fika style ($18.50) was great! The smoked salmon + mayonnaise was a perfect harmony that brought out the flavours of each other. Not to mention that the platter was huge and generous, no less!

Lovin' Lovely

While my Tunnbrödsrulle ($18.90) was so disappointing! The swedish thin bread (wrap) was hard, the taste was just ketchup and potato, not quite what I would have expected especially for the price I paid.

Lovin' Lovely

All the best in that journey of job searching! May we be HAPPY people!!

Lovin' Lovely

Since I was in the neighbourhood and have read so much about this place, Maison Ikkoku I went (alone as Min had to leave for another appointment)!

Lovin' Lovely

There is something magical about wood and warm lights = PERFECT!

Lovin' Lovely

I love the wall treatment for the interior that gives off this raw finish! Best way to enjoy a cup of coffee with no form of disturbances.

Lovin' Lovely Lovin' Lovely

Being spoilt for choice at the selection of cakes, I went for the conventional (Yes, I am quite boring) but equally tasteful, Carrot Cake! NO REGRETS! The moist cake with a tinge of sweetness (correct me if I’m wrong about the sweetness part as I was having a bad ass cough that affected my taste buds) fills your mouth with every bite! I like how generous the nuts were in the cake. Anyone knows if it’s baked by Maison Ikkoku themselves or ?

I had to give their mains a miss this time round but now that is another reason why I should come back again!! Check out their menu on what they have to offer!

Lovin' Lovely

But of course, the highlight of my visit, Coffee! I can’t quite get the correct way of describing the blend of Maison’s coffee but it’s definitely not your usual kind either, by usual I mean coffee chain’s standard. It was smooth and that distintive coffee after taste is one that leaves you wanting more of it.

Words of Wisdom, well said!!

Lovin' Lovely

Tables were actually made out of cabinet doors!

Lovin' Lovely

On a side note, I *APPLAUD* cafes that serves water at absolutely NO extra cost! Not that I’m being a miser when it comes to paying for water (The most ridiculous was once when I had to pay $1.00 for a glass) but it’s these additional service that makes a cafe experience more pleasant.

The Coastal Settlement

Located right at the other end of where most of my friends and myself stay, so the usual reaction you get when you tell your friends that we should have a gathering in Changi would be “Yao mou gao chor ahhh?” or directly translated as “Are you serious/crazy/for real?”. So I’m all smiles when we finally made our way to The Coastal Settlements after hearing so much about this awesome place. In life what more can I ask for – friends, conversations, food, chill and a wonderful discovery!

Off we go…

The Coastal Settlements

Such gorgeous blue which I was reminded of “The sky’s the limit”, a phrase I often tell myself! Singapore never felt so beautiful before!

The Coastal Settlements

After a good whole hour of driving, we arrived and a rustic sign greeted us that immediately sets the mood right.

The Coastal Settlements

*NOTE: A good advice is to call and reserve seats just in case by the time you travel all the way down and is left with nothing. There are both out and indoor seats, so do specify what you’ll like.
We had the outdoor seating and had quite a bit of a mosquito(sssssssss) attack but what later was told by friends that they might have been sand flies because the itch on the bites lasted quite a few days for Sophie and myself. Whatever it was, it was definitely fierce and HUNGRY!! Grrrr! Yes, this is definitely something to take note off when choosing your seats!! Choose WISELY!

It was quite a last minute decision to actually make reservation so by the time I called we were left with either indoor sitting but for a limited time only or an outdoor one that could last us all the way till the night.

The Coastal Settlements

The good thing about sitting outside is you’ll definitely be greeted by an awesome view, fresh air, breathable space for thoughts to wander and great lighting (which made the photos even nicer)! This was taken when it was about to sun set, so you can totally imagine how it felt to be transported to another country for that brief moment.

The Coastal Settlements

The interior of the cafe which I didn’t get to explore much because it was bustling with patrons all over and most of my photos ended up with blur shots of people moving around. But I’d be back again to Coastal Settlements, this time, a bit earlier when the crowd is lesser to take more photos. But the warmth feeling stays throughout in and out of cafe, which is what I liked most about TCS.

FOOD wise, there were thumbs up and down too.
The Spicy Salami Pizza ($21) and Portobello Mushroom Fries got our thumbs UP while the Roasted Chicken got our thumbs DOWN. The only good thing that came along the chicken were the truffle fries, I must say that it’s not too bad.

The Coastal Settlements

The Coastal Settlements The Coastal Settlements

Portobello Mushroom Fries ($15) – Crispy on the outside, juicy and succulent on the inside. No joke!! I like how generous they were with the chucks of portobello mushroom that was fried to perfection. I’m not quite sure if the mayo that came along with it was the normal ones or from what I read it might have been truffle mayo. Tell me if you know?

The Coastal Settlements

Warm Almond Cake ($12)

The Coastal Settlements

My latte was okay (Not fantastic but could do better) and this was Sophie’s Hazelnut Latte which she claims that it can never taste wrong with an extract added to coffee.

The Coastal Settlements

Friends that I couldn’t have asked for more than anything!! Let’s have a FULL turnup of The Alternative Kids the next time round, okay?

Coastal

*Stole this photo off Amy.

I’d definitely love to come back and try more food on it’s menu but all for one day’s experience, it was great!!

Tuesday – Sunday { 10.30am till 12 Midnight } Last order for Food @ 9:45pm
serving: All Day Breakfast, Lunch ,Tea / Coffee Break, Dinner, Happy Hours & ‘Happier Hours!’.

*Unless Monday falls on a Public Holiday or it’s eve, it would remain close*

The good thing though would be TCS isn’t only accessible by cars (++ point is that there were aplenty of parking lots available next to the cafe) as we saw a bus stop right outside too (Check out Bus No. 29).
