Things in the city

FOOD

Nothing beats having great food with a great lunch kahki facing a great view. Thanks Twinny!! You really made my days working in this fast pace area a whole lot better! Though it was brief moments, but it’s moments of bearing the heart and soul on what’s happening around us these days! I’m so going to miss it.

On another note of awesome finds –  chee chong fun, peng kueh for lunch isn’t a bad idea too! Think #archivingsg. Located on the ground level of The Arcade, I’m always served by 2 ‘smiling’ aunties that are most probably the nicest people around in the city area!

SIGNS

Not only myself but many others out there too had no idea that such signage even existed other than the typical yellow ones, so you can imagine how excited I was when I saw this. Plus it was NEON GREEN! Maybe I should get one for my own usage.

The message couldn’t be any clearer than this! Simple and right in your face – FIND ME MY IPOD NOWWWW!

FUN

i Light on a random Friday night with a colleague who was also working late in the office. It’s such a nice way to quieten down the chaotic week and get some inspiration, maybe a ‘light bulb’ moment to get those braincells moving.

Visited this quaint bookstore: Precious Words – Bookstore With A Difference located right at the heart of CBD after a colleague went on a ‘books buying rampage’ and she snapped up like tonnes of good reads for a fraction of the original cost all because they were having discounts up to 50% (it might have been more, not quite sure about that). The cool thing about this place is that they do rental of books too, which I think it is an awesome idea, which allows me to read at a lower cost! (Of course, NLB still rocks my socks). Note, that full payment of the books is needed upfront, unless you are returning it after less than a month of reading period, they would refund you 60% of what the cost of the book is. Don’t we all need good books to keep us sane in this insane world!!?

Have a great weekend ahead, it’s not where you are but it’s the company that matters the most, even if it’s in the company of a couple of books and a cup of good coffee in hand.

SWEET | SALTY | SPICY

I’m really glad and thankful that I have a bunch of ‘foodie gang’ that has good taste buds and is those that would hunt for nice food. So off we (Sophie, Sam, Shiwen & myself) went to SWEET | SALTY | SPICY that serves Thai food at Rail Mall off Upper Bukit Timah which was a breeze to get there after church service.

This Thai restaurant is situated right next with Cafe EPICurious, which serves “All day Breakfast” and other stuff, so the good thing is, since they are right next to one another, they allow you to order from one another’s menu. So how could we have forgo trying out their coffee, right? I must say that the food from SSS was great, quite unexpected from an area in the far west of Singapore would actually serve good Thai food. We’re definitely heading back again when we have the chance.

Right down the lane is where we got our Cedele cakes from – that was the best way to end a Sunday evening. Friends, conversations, food and all smiles!

——

Crispy soft shell crapwith shallot, green mango, coriander & chilli dressing – $13 This is THE EPIC dish for all of us! Double thumbs up!! The crunchiness of this dish makes it not only good in taste but also interesting in terms of what’s hidden in the next bite.

Wok fried minced chicken or pork with fresh red chilli, apple eggplants & holy basil – $14 Which is the usual kra pow gai which was also good. But coming from a person who adores Thai food, I felt that it would have tasted better with stronger basil taste and an egg with it. No kra pow is complete without an egg!

Snapper fillet wrapped in a Banana leaf with red curry paste (Coconut milk and ginger) – $10 This is like otah but with a softer consistency. It has quite a fishy taste to it, so be warned, just in case you’re not a huge fan of it.

FlatWhite from Epicurious was weird, it had a funny taste which I don’t quite know how to describe. Soaps was saying that it might be because of the ‘lower grade’ coffee used. We’re hoping to give it another try with their ‘all day breakfast’ & pastries.

Blueberry Maple Cake that was AWESOME from Cedele made my day!! This was such a great find which some might claim that Cedele doesn’t exactly serves good cake BUT you’re wrong.

Real Dark Chocolate Cake brought smiles!

Canopy – Garden Dining

Charlie Lim – There Is No Love

A friend who has left for Australia some time this year was back in Singapore for a short study break and as our dearest friend was nesting his broken heart so the only thing we could do was to get together and sip on good coffee!

But of course, being in the land of awesome cafes – Yes, we were all VERY jealous of that fact that he’s studying in Australia (The grass is always greener on the other side, Yes?). But I’m glad to say that Singapore is slowly and surely coming up with many interesting cafes too – off we went to Canopy – Garden Dining (all thanks to Ping for the recommendation which we absolutely loved). Canopy offers good cafe ambience rather than awesome food, which I think I’d love to give it another try again.

A sniff of fresh air.

View from the inside out…

The MAIN reason why we all rejoiced – ALL DAY ‘BREAKFAST’! Way to go!

My Flat White wasn’t awesome but it’s definitely better than what’s served at commercial coffee joints out there.

I can’t remember what this dish was called but I remember it had mushrooms in it. Had a small bite and I loved it. The omelet was creamy and the mushroom choices were great!

The Eggs Benedict – soft poached eggs on english muffin with cooked ham, mixed salad and hollandaise sauce. If you haven’t had a chance to try this dish from other places, I can say that Canopy has done their good but there’s definitely still room for improvement. Like my egg yokes were on the cooked side when I was expecting it to be the runny egg yokes?

The Sticky Date Pudding that was a disappointment since many of us that were present on that day had tasted way better stuff than this. The only thing that was passable was the Vanilla ice cream which rocked! I felt that the date pudding was more of a ‘cupcake’ consistency instead of what it’s supposedly to taste like.

Fig and Honey ice cream which I was told by Ivy (she tried her’s while in NZ for a holiday) that it’s a sweet but not over powering kind of sweetness in it – true enough! I think I could have another 1 of this if it isn’t for the fact that we were all full.

I’m hungry

Wanted to take a break from all that Korean postings as I’m stuck with what I should write. So here goes a food post that has been sitting in my draft for a long time. I am always gamed up for food adventures – be it locally or overseas. But in any case, I’m posting this because I’m 101% missing the awesome food in Penang and of course my cousins & their families. Hopefully, I can head back real soon for a short break!!

Char Kwey Theow – the white stuff at the top is authentic crab meat that added a tinge of sweetness in it. Really!

Though not as good as the first Char Kwey Theow, this wasn’t that bad either but I think Mom was being picky.

Penang - Food

The awesomest pancake ever! That had this milky taste if you had it plain or if you wanted a choice of coconut fillings! Both equally GOOD!

Penang - Food

No trip to Malaysia is complete without A&W (if it’s possible) – all thanks to Sillypore not even having 1 outlet! *booohoo* I miss having my WAFFLES daily!

Penang - Food

I still think that A&W is the ONLY place that does the curly fries the right way! As I type this, I’m already drooling!

Penang - Food

THIS Tau huay or known as Tau Fa in cantonese, I cannot stop raving how good it is! Other than the fact that it’s smooth, it’s the syrup that makes it even better! Unlike in Singapore, we use normal sugar syrup but in Malaysia they use Gula Melaka (palm sugar) which makes the consistency + overall taste AWESOME! It was so good that we had to take-away 2 packets each!

Chee Chong Fan – another of a dish that I can eat daily without getting bored of it! Another dish that has a bit of a difference between Singapore & Malaysia is the choice of sauce. An unusual sauce made up of Har Gao which mostly used only in Malaysia while Singapore uses the sweet sauce.

2D1N Soju Bang

After coming back to reality aka Singapore, I was having major Korean withdrawal syndromes. Can’t help but admit that the food is something that I think would taste the same after like 5 days of continuous eating and you’ll get a tad sick and tired of it BUT it’s also a flavour that you crave once you don’t have access to it?

So the very nice cousins recommended this awesome place to satisfy my Korean food cravings – 2D1N Soju Bang. Ditching the parents aside for a day, the cousins decided to ‘MEAT’ up for a good feast and I must say, I’m won over by 2D1N Soju Bang’s meat buffet. For the price of $20++, it offers a whole range of meat choices which is totally value for money.

There are also a good assortment of typical Korean side dishes like the kimchi, corn and as like most Korean eateries, water is free flow too, so YAY! The very nice ladies (who are Koreans) is super nice to keep changing our foil when it gets all burnt and black – so ++ for attentiveness. Just be prepared to smell like a barbecued meat at the end of the day, but no worries, with a multiple times of showering, you’ll be all good! Be warned that because they don’t take phone reservations, so be prepared to queue a little especially during the dinner period, so just get there earlier.

We were actually craving for some good Makgeoli but sadly they ran out of it – but because of that, we’re definitely heading back again till we have our craving fixed.

Ps: I forgot to mention that if you get assigned to the ‘rooms’ – it has a time limit of ~2 hours for you to finish your meal vs those seats that are available outside.

How to get to 2D1N Soju Bang:

It’s diagonally across from Maxwell Market. If you’re at the bus stop that is opposite the tooth relic temple, walk all the way straight and cross the traffic light which brings you to Fairfield Methodist Church which you would then need to cross to the right. Once you meet a whole stretch of Korean restaurant, you’re on the right track and just keep walking for about less than 5 minutes – tadaaaaa, you’ve reached 2D1N Soju Bang. (Hope it’s helpful?)
